AFTER THE BATTLE 2022

 

In this series I wanted to pay homage to the CHESSMAN series by Erwin Olaf by creating a tribe of the sort that might feature in the MAD MAX movies. I made two photographs of each person, the first as if they were exhausted the second with them screaming, (I had to do a little explaining to my studio neighbours). The scream was born of an obsession I developed with the work of the painter Francis Bacon and in particular the way he incorporated primal, agonising screams in much of his work.

 

For this iteration I have removed each of the screaming images leaving only the exhausted portraits as if each sitter had been to battle, either with their personal demons, a post apocalyptical fight for survival or any one of the 32 ongoing conflicts happening on our small planet as of today.
